These My Passport SSD drives are amazing. When data connections are broken, there's a small buffer, but the file table can't track sectors properly, and that has to be avoided.
Drives need a FAT (file allocation table), currently NTFS, for PC's, which is basically an index. Once a drive is at times disconnecring, new or old, solid state or spinning, it's not long after the drive will go belly up. Also, quite honestly, a 2nd hard drive sounds in order, if you want to follow some safe backup guidelines, and that is quite the norm with most anyone serious about keeping they're stuff intact (which you may already be doing, but just pointing this out. So given the bad experience of an external drive, whatever drive option you choose (HHD, or SSD, both quite stable), run some tests sending and retrieving large files, before committing to that hard work you're putting in. Your startup drive only indicates Macintosh HD, but given the i7 CPU, and 16 gb ram, you should have a pretty stable system. Make backups to a separate internal hard drive (SSD or mechanical) and save the USB external drives for offline storage. Yes, I understand there are multiple "channels" of USB communication at work, but even when managed correctly, you're still processing all that data transfer by a single OS. If you're also using a hardware control surface, that's another boat-load of USB information being managed. For starters, you're probably already using USB as your audio interface connection, so there's a lot of data trying to be managed by USB in near real-time. while it can be done, I can't say that I would recommend recording to an external drive. I have had quite a few "external" drives give me a drive speed error when trying to record to them.
